Share with us 2024 is an important national survey of Australians aged 18 years and over.

It will help us understand:

  • Community attitudes towards people with disability.
  • How these are experienced by people with disability.

There are four main groups we want to hear from. Each group will help us understand different attitudes and experiences.

The general community

  • How the community views people with disability.
  • How the community interacts with people with disability.

People who make hiring decisions

  • How they feel about hiring people with disability.
  • How they make decisions about hiring people with disability.

People who work in health, community services, education, law and justice

  • How workers in key sectors view people with disability.

People with disability

  • Experiences interacting with people in the community and key sectors.
  • How they feel about their place in the community.

The results will be used to track progress under the community attitudes outcomes area of Australia’s Disability Strategy 2021-2031.

The Survey is invitation-only.

If your household was selected, you will have received a survey invitation in the mail.

We only need one person from your household to complete the Survey.

The person answering must be aged 18 years or over.

If your household has taken part in this Survey in 2022 and agreed to be recontacted, thank you. We ask that the same person take part this year.

You can take part online

We would prefer you to take part in the Survey online if you can.

This is the quickest and easiest way to participate. It saves paper and the data is easier for us to process.

The online survey is available in plain English, Easy English, Arabic, Korean, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese or Vietnamese.

To complete online, use the details on the letter sent to your household:

You can finish the Survey in more than one sitting. Just save your answers and close the browser. When you log in again, you will go back to where you left off.

You can fill in a paper form

If you do not have internet access or prefer not to complete it online, you can complete it on paper

  • There is no need to contact us to request a paper form.
  • The paper forms will be sent about a month after the first invitation.
  • They will not be sent to households that have completed or opted out of the Survey.
  • After you finish, return the Survey in the reply-paid envelope provided.
  • You can keep the cover letter for your reference.

The questionnaire will take about 15 minutes to complete.

The Survey asks all participants general questions about disability. Topics include:

  • Your understanding of disability.
  • Your attitudes towards people with different types of disability.
  • Whether you have interacted with people with disability.
  • Whether you care for or work with people with disability.
  • Whether you have a disability or long-term health condition.

A few questions are asked only if relevant to the person answering. For example, people who live with disability are asked:

  • Their experience interacting with people in their community.
  • Their experience interacting with services.
  • How they feel about their place in their community.

There are no right or wrong answers. We ask you to be honest.

You can choose not to answer any question as you go through the Survey.

The Survey is the main way the Government will measure community attitudes as part of Australia’s Disability Strategy 2021-2031

It will help track how community attitudes towards people with disability change over time. It will also help us share how these attitudes affect people with disability.

The aim is to identify ways to make society more welcoming and inclusive for people with disability.

You will be eligible for a $15 gift card when you reach the end of the Survey. It is okay to skip a few questions if you do not wish to answer them. We just ask that you answer most questions as you go through the Survey.

We will ask you how you want to receive your gift card. We prefer to send it via email to save paper, time and postage costs. However, you do have the option to receive it via post.

To receive your gift card via email:

  • Confirm or update your email address when asked at the end of the Survey.
  • You will be sent a $15 e-voucher automatically.
  • If you do not receive it within 24 hours, please contact us

To receive your gift card via post:

  • Confirm or update your address when asked at the end of the Survey.
  • You will be sent a $15 gift card in the mail.
  • Please allow time for preparation and postage.
  • If you do not receive it within four weeks, please contact us.

It is entirely your choice whether you take part in the Survey. Participation is totally voluntary

If you do choose to take part:

  • You can stop at any time (note that you only receive the gift card if you reach the end).
  • You can choose not to answer any question as you go through the Survey (you will still receive the gift card as long as you reach the end and have attempted most questions).
  • You can opt out of the research after you have completed the Survey. You will need to contact us before we finish processing the data. We can find your survey and securely delete it before data is sent for analysis.

If you do not want to take part:

  • You do not have to do anything, just ignore any reminders sent to your household.
  • If you would prefer not to be sent reminders, you can contact us to opt out.

We have only invited a small number of Australian households to take part in the Survey.

We need to hear from as many of the selected households as possible.

This gives us more reliable results that are more likely to be valued by people who make policy decisions.

Every person who completes the Survey helps us make sure the data:

  • Is as accurate as possible.
  • Represents people from all over Australia.
  • Truly reflects the diverse views and experiences of Australians.
  • Has the best chance of positively impacting outcomes for people with disability.

The main benefit of taking part in the Survey is knowing you are helping with important research.

By taking part, you are helping us understand the real views and experiences of people in our community.

If we better understand community attitudes towards people with disability, we are better placed to support people to improve their attitudes and behaviours. The aim is to lead to improved outcomes for people with disability.

You will also receive a $15 gift card as a small token of thanks for your help.

There should not be any risks involved in taking part in the Survey.

The researchers have many systems in place to make sure data is secure (please, refer to: ‘How will the data be stored?’ question) and to protect your privacy (please refer to: ‘How is my privacy protected’).

You only need to answer questions if you feel comfortable and safe to do so.

If you need help or feel upset at any stage, please contact the research team or the support services available here.

Your household was one of a small number of addresses chosen at random from a publicly available list.

The list is called the Geo-coded National Address File. It is made up of addresses provided by Australia Post, the Australian Electoral Commission and government land departments.

If your household has taken part in the previous Survey in 2022, thank you. We ask that the same person take part this year.

Your privacy is protected by Australian law.

Any information that could be used to identify you, such as your contact details, is:

  • Stored separately from survey data.
  • Only accessible by the researchers working on the project.
  • Securely destroyed when it is no longer needed.

Your survey responses are completely safe and private. They are combined with those of other participants and analysed as a group.

Both the Australian National University and the Social Research Centre follow the principles of The Research Society's Code of Professional Behaviour.

The researchers also follow the Australian Data and Insights Association's Privacy Code. This Code is specific to the research industry. It provides practical guidance on how to comply with the Australian Privacy Principles in the collection, storage and use of research data.

The Australian National University’s Privacy Policy is available here. It includes information about how a person can:

  • Access their personal information.
  • Ask for their personal information to be corrected or updated.
  • Complain about a breach of an Australian Privacy Principle by the Australian National University.
  • Find out how the Australian National University will handle the complaint.

The Social Research Centre’s Privacy Policy is available here.

Your details will be kept private and secure. If you have questions about how we protect your privacy, please contact us

The data and any contact details will be securely stored by the researchers, on behalf of the Australian Government Department of Social Services.

The data is stored on a secure drive and is only accessible to the Survey research team and administration team.

Any information that could be used to identify you (such as the address we sent the survey invitation to) will be stored separately from the Survey data. It will be securely deleted as soon as we are finished with it.

The Survey data will also be checked to make sure the responses do not include any identifying information.

The data will then be provided to the Australian Government Department of Social Services.

The data will be archived in the Australian Data Archive for at least five years.

If you have questions about how your data will be stored, please contact us.

The data will be combined and analysed.

Results will be published online and in reports that influence people who make policy decisions in Australia.

The results will be used to track progress under the community attitudes outcome area of Australia’s Disability Strategy 2021-2031.

Having a better understanding of community attitudes towards disability will help policy decision makers:

  • Learn which attitudes and behaviours have the biggest impact on the lives of people with disability.
  • Put measures in place to improve attitudes and behaviours towards people with disability.
  • Help the community understand how to interact positively with people with disability.
  • Help employers and workers gain confidence interacting with people with disability.

If you have questions about how your responses will be used, please contact us.

There are two reasons why you might be asked to provide your contact details:

If you give us your contact details, they will be used only for the reason(s) given.

If you agree to be recontacted, your contact details will be provided to the Australia’s Disability Strategy Survey researchers, and future survey administrators.  Your details will be kept private and secure until they are needed.

If you do not wish to be contacted for any future survey, we securely delete your contact details once they are no longer needed.

The Survey was previously run in late 2022-2023 by the Social Research Centre. This Survey is part of an ongoing study and may be run again to see if there have been any changes.

You may be invited to participate in future rounds of the Survey if you complete the Share with us 2024 Survey and agree to be recontacted. Your contact details will be provided to the Australia’s Disability Strategy Survey researchers, and future survey administrators for the purpose of contacting you to complete a future survey.
