Share with us 2024 is an important survey of Australians 18 years and older.

It will help us understand:

  • Community attitudes towards people with disability.
  • How people with disability experience these attitudes.

There are four main groups of people we want to hear from. Each group will help us understand different attitudes and experiences.

The community

  • What the community thinks about people with disability.
  • How the community interacts with people with disability.

People who make decisions about hiring people

  • How they feel about hiring people with disability.
  • How they make decisions about hiring people with disability

People who work in health, community services, education, law and justice

  • What workers in these areas think about people with disability.

People with disability

  • About their experiences interacting with people in the community and in areas like health and education.
  • How they feel about their place in the community.

We will use the results of the Survey to measure how we are doing in the community attitudes area of Australia’s Disability Strategy 2021-2031.

You need to have an invitation to take part in the Survey.

If we have chosen your household to take part, you will get a Survey invitation in the mail.

We only need one person from your household to do the Survey.

They must be 18 years or older.

Someone from your household might have taken part in the 2022 survey.

If this person agreed for us to contact them again, we will ask them to take part in the 2024 survey.

The Survey will take about 15 minutes to do. But you can take as much time as you need.

The Survey asks everyone general questions about disability. Like questions about:

  • What you understand about disability.
  • How you feel about people with different types of disability.
  • If you have interacted with people with disability.
  • If you care for or work with people with disability.
  • If you have a disability or long-term health condition.

There are also a few questions that are only asked if they relate to you. For example, the Survey asks people with disability:

  • About their experience interacting with people in their community.
  • About their experience using services like health and education.
  • How they feel about their place in their community.

There are no right or wrong answers. We ask you to be honest.

You can choose not to answer any question as you go through the Survey.

The Survey is how the government will measure community attitudes to disability for Australia’s Disability Strategy 2021-2031

It will help us understand how community attitudes towards people with disability change over time. It will also help us share how these attitudes affect people with disability.

The aim of the Survey is to find ways we can make society more welcoming and inclusive for people with disability.

You can get a $15 gift card when you finish the Survey. You don’t have to answer every question. We just ask that you answer most questions.

We will ask you how want to get your gift card. You will get it more quickly if we send it via email. But you can also choose to get it in the mail.

To get your gift card via email:

  • confirm or update your email address when at the end of the survey
  • we will then send you a $15 e-voucher automatically
  • if you don’t get it in 24 hours, please contact us.

To get your gift card in the post:

  • confirm or update your address at the end of the survey
  • we will send you a $15 gift card in the mail
  • please allow some time for us to package and post the gift card
  • if you don’t get it in four weeks, please contact us.

It is your choice whether to take part in the Survey or not.

If you do choose to take part:

  • You can stop at any time (though you only get the gift card if you reach the end).
  • You can choose not to answer any question in the Survey (you will still get the gift card if you reach the end and have answered most questions).
  • You can choose not to take part in the research after you have done the survey. You will need to contact us before we finish processing the data. We can find your survey and delete it before we have used the information.

If you don’t want to take part:

  • You don’t have to do anything – just ignore any reminders we send you.
  • If you don’t want us to send you reminders, you can contact us

We have only invited a small number of households to take part in the Survey.

We need to hear from as many of these households as possible.

This gives us more accurate results. That means that people who make decisions in government are more likely to see the value of these results.

Everyone who does the Survey helps us make sure the data:

  • Is as accurate as possible.
  • Includes people from all over Australia.
  • Covers the diverse views and experiences of Australians.
  • Has the best chance of positively affecting people with disability.

Taking part in the Survey you can know that you’re helping with important research.

You’re helping us understand the real views and experiences of people in our community.

The more we understand community attitudes to people with disability, the more we can help people to improve their attitudes and behaviours. We want to improve the lives of people with disability.

You will also get a $15 gift card as a small token of thanks.

There shouldn’t be any risks in taking part in the Survey.

The researchers have systems in place to make sure your information is safe, and to protect your privacy.

You only need to answer questions that you feel comfortable and safe to answer.

If you need help or feel upset at any stage, please contact the research team or the support services available

We choose your address at random from a publicly available list.

  • The list is called the Geocoded National Address File (G-NAF).

  • It includes addresses provided from Australia Post, the Australian Electoral Commission and other organisations.

Someone from your household might have taken part in the 2022 survey.

If this person agreed for us to contact them again, we will ask them to take part in the 2024 survey.

Australian law protects your privacy:

The Privacy Act 1988 (Cth)
The Australian Privacy Principles (APPs).

Any information that could identify who you are, such as your contact details, is:

  • stored separately from the survey data
  • only accessible by the researchers and their managers working on the project
  • securely destroyed when we don’t need it anymore.

Your survey responses are safe and private. All survey answers are combined and analysed as a group.

Both the Australian National University and the Social Research Centre follow the principles of The Research Society's Code of Professional Behaviour.

The researchers also follow the Australian Data and Insights Association’s Privacy Code. This Code is specific to the research industry. It is a practical guide on how to comply with the Australian Privacy Principles when collecting, storing and using research data.

The Australian National University’s Privacy Policy includes information about how a person can:

  • Access their personal information.
  • Ask for their personal information to be corrected or updated.
  • Complain about the Australian National University not meeting an Australian Privacy Principle.
  • Find out how the Australian National University will handle the complaint.

You can find the Social Research Centre’s Privacy Policy on its website.

We will keep your information safe and private. If you have questions about how we protect your privacy, please contact us

The researchers will securely store the survey data and any contact details for the Australian Government Department of Social Services.

They will store the data on a secure drive that is only accessible to the research team and their managers.

We will store any information that could be used to identify you (such as the address we sent the Survey invitation to) separately from the survey data. It will be securely deleted as soon as our researchers are finished with it.

We will also check the Survey data to make sure the responses don’t include any identifying information.

We will then provide the data to the Australian Government Department of Social Services.

The data will be archived in the Australian Data Archive for at least 5 years.

If you have questions about how your data will be stored, please contact us.

The data will be combined and analysed.

We will publish the results online and in reports that influence people who make government decisions in Australia.

The results will be used to measure progress being made in the community attitudes area of Australia’s Disability Strategy 2021-2031.

Having a better understanding of community attitudes towards disability will help people making decisions:

  • Learn which attitudes and behaviours have the biggest effect on the lives of people with disability.
  • Introduce ways to improve attitudes and behaviours towards people with disability.
  • Help the community understand how to interact with people with disability in a positive way.
  • Help employers and workers be more confident interacting with people with disability.

If you have questions about how we will use your responses, please contact us.

There are two reasons why we might ask you to provide your contact details:

  1. If you agree to take part in a similar survey in the future.
  2. To update your details for sending the gift card

If you give us your contact details, we will only use them for the reasons above.

If you agree to be contacted again, we will give your contact information to researchers for future Share with us Surveys.

If you don’t want us to contact you in the future, we will securely delete your contact details when we don’t need them anymore.

We might run this Survey again to find out about any changes since the last Survey.

If you do the Share with us 2024 survey and agree to be contacted again, we might ask you to do this Survey in the future.

We will also share your contact information with any new researchers for future Share with us surveys.
