Welcome to the Share with us information page

On this page, we answer common questions about Share with us, Australia’s Disability Strategy Survey.

We will simply call it ‘the Survey’ in most places.

Share with us is an important survey of Australians 18 years and older.

It will help us understand:

  • Community attitudes towards people with disability.
  • How people with disability experience these attitudes.

There are four main groups of people we want to hear from. Each group will help us understand different attitudes and experiences.

The community

  • What the community thinks about people with disability.
  • How the community interacts with people with disability.

People who make decisions about hiring people

  • How they feel about hiring people with disability.
  • How they make decisions about hiring people with disability

People who work in health, community services, education, law and justice

  • What workers in these areas think about people with disability.

People with disability

  • About their experiences interacting with people in the community and in areas like health and education.
  • How they feel about their place in the community.

We will use the results of the Survey to measure how we are doing in the community attitudes area of Australia’s Disability Strategy 2021-2031.

The Survey is how the government will measure community attitudes to disability for Australia’s Disability Strategy 2021-2031

It will help us understand how community attitudes towards people with disability change over time. It will also help us share how these attitudes affect people with disability.

The aim of the Survey is to find ways we can make society more welcoming and inclusive for people with disability.

We will repeat Share with us in 2024. It will include many of the same questions as the 2022 survey to help us track changes in attitudes over time.

If you agree to be contacted again in 2024, we will send you a survey invitation then.

We will send one or two updates ahead of the next survey. These will give you information on how the results are being used and will ask you to update your contact details if needed.

The 2024 survey will be invitation only. Like the 2022 survey, it is optional and you can choose to not take part at any time.

It is your choice whether to take part in the Survey or not.

If you do choose to take part:

  • You can stop at any time (though you only get the gift card if you reach the end).
  • You can choose not to answer any question in the Survey (you will still get the gift card if you reach the end and have answered most questions).
  • You can choose not to take part in the research after you have done the survey. You will need to contact us before we finish processing the data. We can find your survey and delete it before we have used the information.

If you don’t want to take part:

  • You don’t have to do anything – just ignore any reminders we send you.
  • If you don’t want us to send you reminders, you can contact us

We have only invited a small number of households to take part in the Survey.

We need to hear from as many of these households as possible.

This gives us more accurate results. That means that people who make decisions in government are more likely to see the value of these results.

Everyone who does the Survey helps us make sure the data:

  • Is as accurate as possible.
  • Includes people from all over Australia.
  • Covers the diverse views and experiences of Australians.
  • Has the best chance of positively affecting people with disability.

Taking part in the Survey you can know that you’re helping with important research.

You’re helping us understand the real views and experiences of people in our community.

The more we understand community attitudes to people with disability, the more we can help people to improve their attitudes and behaviours. We want to improve the lives of people with disability.

You will also get a $10 gift card as a small token of thanks.

There shouldn’t be any risks in taking part in the Survey.

The researchers have systems in place to make sure your information is safe, and to protect your privacy.

You only need to answer questions that you feel comfortable and safe to answer.

If you need help or feel upset at any stage, please contact the research team or the support services available.

Your household was one of a small number of addresses chosen at random from a publicly available list.

The list is called the Geo-coded National Address File. It is made up of addresses provided by Australia Post, the Australian Electoral Commission and government land departments.

Australian law protects your privacy:

The Privacy Act 1988 (Cth)
The Australian Privacy Principles (APPs).

Any information that could identify who you are, such as your contact details, is:

  • Stored separately from the survey data.
  • Only accessible by the researchers at the Social Research Centre.
  • Securely destroyed when we don’t need it anymore.

Your survey responses are safe and private. All survey answers are combined and analysed as a group.

Both the Australian National University and the Social Research Centre follow the principles of The Research Society's Code of Professional Behaviour.

The researchers also follow the Australian Data and Insights Association’s Privacy Code. This Code is specific to the research industry. It is a practical guide on how to comply with the Australian Privacy Principles when collecting, storing and using research data.

The Australian National University’s Privacy Policy includes information about how a person can:

  • Access their personal information.
  • Ask for their personal information to be corrected or updated.
  • Complain about the Australian National University not meeting an Australian Privacy Principle.
  • Find out how the Australian National University will handle the complaint.

You can find the Social Research Centre’s Privacy Policy on its website.

If you have questions about how we protect your privacy, please contact us

The Social Research Centre will securely store the survey data and any contact details for the Australian National University.

It will store the data on a secure drive that is only accessible to the research team at the Social Research Centre.

We will store any information that could be used to identify you (such as the address we sent the Survey invitation to) separately from the survey data. It is securely deleted as soon as are finished with it.

We will also check the Survey data to make sure the responses don’t include any identifying information.

We will then provide the data to the Australian Government Department of Social Services.

The data will be archived in the Australian Data Archive for at least 5 years.

If you have questions about how your data will be stored, please contact us.

The data will be combined and analysed.

We will publish the results online and in reports that influence people who make government decisions in Australia.

We will use the results to measure progress being made in the community attitudes area of Australia’s Disability Strategy 2021-2031.

Having a better understanding of community attitudes towards disability will help people making decisions:

  • Learn which attitudes and behaviours have the biggest effect on the lives of people with disability.
  • Introduce ways to improve attitudes and behaviours towards people with disability.
  • Help the community understand how to interact with people with disability in a positive way.
  • Help employers and workers be more confident interacting with people with disability.

If you have questions about how we will use your responses, please contact us.
